Culture Threads Assessment

Understand what's actually driving your culture challenges, before you try to change them

Most organizations that come to me have already tried something. A retreat. A workshop. A new set of values. And yet the same patterns keep showing up: people aren’t collaborating the way they used to, conversations aren’t happening, conflict is simmering under the surface. The problem usually isn’t effort or intentions. It’s that no one has looked closely at what’s actually driving the pattern.

That’s what the Culture Threads Assessment does.

What it is

The Culture Threads Assessment is Phase 1 of my Culture in Practice Program. It’s a structured diagnostic process that gives you a clear, honest picture of your organization’s current culture: what’s working, what isn’t, and what’s underneath the patterns you keep seeing.

The right combination of tools depends on what we learn in our initial planning conversations. Not every organization needs every element.

Culture Mapping

A qualitative process using the Culture Design Canvas framework to surface the unspoken norms, behaviors, and patterns shaping how work actually gets done. This is the foundational step of every assessment, regardless of organization size.

Culture Identity Assessment Tool (CIAT)

A validated quantitative survey that profiles your culture across concrete dimensions including leadership, alignment, behavior, and performance. Recommended for organizations with 50 or more staff. Shows not just what people think, but what your culture is actually prioritizing.

Communication and Collaboration Assessment

When communication and collaboration challenges are part of the picture, I add targeted assessments or facilitated sessions to understand how your team works together and where friction is coming from. The specific approach depends on your organization’s situation and history.

Together, these tools give you and your leadership team a much richer picture of how people are actually experiencing the culture, and what that means for where to focus next. The assessment doesn’t conclude the work. It makes the work possible.

Who Is the Assessment For?

The Culture Threads Assessment works for organizations of any size. I work most often with nonprofits and associations with 50 or more staff, where culture complexity tends to run deep and the diagnostic work pays off quickly.

If you’re an Executive Director, CEO, or senior leader dealing with persistent culture challenges and ready to understand what’s actually driving them, this is for you.

What It Looks Like in Practice

One organization I worked with had grown significantly over a short period of time. The collaboration that used to come naturally had broken down. Conflict was showing up, and the conversations that needed to happen weren’t happening.

After working through the Culture Threads Assessment, including a combination of DiSC, Better Teams, and Culture Mapping, the team reported substantially improved communication, stronger collaboration, and a much greater ability to work through challenges together.

Rather than trying to address those challenges across two or three one-time workshops, we worked together over several months, incrementally building the team’s skills and their ability to have the conversations they had been avoiding.

That’s what made it possible for them to start working through their challenges instead of around them.

At the end of the process, they had a clear roadmap of high-priority actions. With a busy season ahead and limited budget flexibility, they had what they needed to move forward on their own.

Other organizations use the assessment as the starting point for deeper culture design work. Either way, you’ll have what you need to decide what comes next.

“Linda is exceptional at creating safe spaces and challenging teams to reach their full potential through open communication and reflection. Our training pushed us to examine our strengths and weaknesses, build stronger working relationships, and practice active listening. We came out of the session with solid action items, a renewed sense of energy for our mission and an even greater trust in one another.”

What you walk away with

At the end of the assessment, you’ll have something most organizations don’t: language for what’s actually going on. Not just a sense that something is off, but the ability to articulate your culture out loud, name the patterns, and understand what’s driving them.

You walk away with:

  • A clear picture of your current culture, what’s working and what isn’t, including issues you may not have known were issues.
  • A summary of patterns and their likely drivers, so you understand what’s underneath what you’re seeing.
  • A strategic roadmap that identifies your priorities, so you can move forward in a constructive and purposeful way, whether that’s with me or on your own.

Our team benefited greatly from our two sessions with Linda. At each training, we walked away with clear next steps and takeaways to implement to make our team even stronger. Linda is a fantastic facilitator — she knows when to provide space for teams to work on an issue or problem, and when to step in to keep the conversation productive. As a supervisor, I constantly refer back to everything I learned to manage my team more effectively.

This is a good fit if ...

You’ve tried workshops or retreats and the same issues keep coming back.

You’re navigating growth, transition, or leadership change and want to understand what’s driving the culture before making decisions.

You’re seeing turnover, conflict, or misalignment and want to address the root cause, not just the symptoms.

You’re a new ED, CEO, or Interim Executive who inherited a culture and want to understand its strengths and gaps before deciding where to focus.

This is not the right fit if ...

You’re looking for a one-time workshop or a quick fix.

Your organization is in financial crisis and keeping the doors open is the immediate priority.

You’re not ready to look honestly at your own patterns, including leadership behavior.

Senior leadership isn’t genuinely committed to the process or willing to take an active role.

Why I Do This Work

I work with nonprofit and association Executive Directors and CEOs who are dealing with culture problems that workshops and quick fixes aren’t solving. Turnover, conflict, leadership misalignment. Problems that keep showing up no matter how much effort has gone into fixing them.

I use the Culture Design Canvas framework, developed by Fearless Culture, which makes culture tangible and actionable, not abstract or fluffy. As a Fearless Culture Associate, I bring a structured, research-backed methodology to every engagement, supported by a global network of culture practitioners.

I led the U.S. nonprofit interviews for the 2025 Global Culture Pulse Study and authored the U.S. Nonprofit Culture Pulse Report based on conversations with senior nonprofit leaders across the country. That research shapes how I think about the challenges you’re navigating right now.

When you work with me, you’re working with someone who understands the pressures purpose-driven organizations are under, and knows how to help you see your culture clearly enough to shift it.

How Long It Takes

The timeline varies based on your organization’s size, what we include in the assessment, and the availability of your staff. Most engagements run between three and seven weeks. We’ll scope it together based on our initial planning conversations.

What Comes Next

Some organizations use the assessment and roadmap to move forward on their own. Others continue to Phase 2, the Culture Design Playbook, or the full Culture in Practice Program. Either way, you’ll have what you need to make that decision.

Ready to Talk?

If you’re dealing with culture challenges that haven’t responded to quick fixes, I’d like to hear about your situation. A first conversation is low-pressure and focused on whether this is the right fit.
