Logo that looks like a weave with an 'H' in the center

When I launched my consulting practice (19 years ago!) and began designing my logo, the idea that kept coming up for me was weaving. Threads are woven into strands, which get woven into rope or fabric. Like in basket weaving, rope making, or even fabric design, individual strands might be useful, but it’s the weaving together that gives it beauty, strength, and durability.

At first glance, my logo might look like a weave. If you look closely, it also holds an “H” in the center—a quiet nod to my company, Howard Consulting LLC, where my focus is on helping purpose-driven organizations build stronger workplace cultures so they can navigate uncertainty and complexity together.

Weaving a Culture That Lasts

A robust culture, much like the intricate weaves of a basket or fabric, provides resilience and helps an organization achieve its purpose.

I see my role as helping teams and organizations weave a strong workplace culture by integrating people, purpose, values, systems, and leadership – so they can achieve their purpose.

Culture is a Structure, Not a Shell

Strong cultures aren’t built overnight. They need the same kind of layering you’d find in building a house. First, the foundation. Then the framework. Then, there are walls, floors, and systems that create the container. Finally, when we move in, this container, this house, becomes a home as we introduce our heart and soul and bring it all to life.

In organizations, a similar thing happens.

A structure is built, composed of people and principles.

As we weave those people and principles together, actions happen, habits form, and behaviors evolve. We have built a culture.

Like a house needs a blueprint, a workplace culture needs an intentional design to support its mission, goals, and strategies. What we include in that blueprint and design, and how we weave them together, will form the culture. Creating a culture that is resilient enough to withstand uncertainty, change, and challenge depends on how intentionally you create your blueprint or design.

Five Threads That Strengthen Team Culture

Here are five core threads I focus on when helping teams build a strong culture.

1. Purpose & Values: Why We Exist

Every strong culture starts with purpose. When people understand why their work matters and how it connects to shared values, alignment becomes easier.

What this looks like in action:

  • Teams aligning goals with values; values with behaviors
  • Leaders anchoring priorities and decisions in purpose.
  • Organizations adapting like ecosystems: evolving to thrive, not just survive.

2. Belonging & Fit

People want to feel like they belong. That sense of inclusion—of being valued, seen, and feeling safe to speak up—creates resilience.

What we work on here:

  • Strengthening trust and psychological safety.
  • Encouraging emotionally intelligent communication.
  • Creating feedback loops that fuel learning and improvement.

3. Teamwork

Intentional teamwork doesn’t just happen—it’s designed.

Organizations work together more effectively when they establish team structures and processes that intentionally support collaboration.

This includes:

  • Aligning on clear norms and working agreements.
  • Supporting teams and individuals through growth or change.
  • Helping teams plan and prioritize their work more effectively.

4. Cross-Team Collaboration

Silos can slowly unravel a strong culture. When organizations create connections across teams, efforts can start to align, and friction decreases.

This often involves:

  • Clarifying how each team contributes to broader goals.
  • Tackling the barriers that get in the way.
  • Building shared language and cohesion between departments.

5. Engaged Leadership

Leadership is the loom that holds the weave steady. It keeps the threads aligned through tension, pressure, and change. Without a steady loom, even the strongest threads can lose shape.

Leaders set the rhythm. When they lead with clarity, consistency, and purpose, they help the entire organization stay aligned—even when things get messy. The way leaders show up sets the tone for how everyone else shows up.

What this looks like in action:

  • Making purpose-driven decisions and helping others do the same
  • Modeling desired behaviors and reinforcing team norms
  • Communicating with clarity, especially in times of change or uncertainty
  • Creating space for reflection, feedback, and growth—starting with themselves

Leaders don’t have to hold everything alone. But they do shape the conditions that help everyone work better together.

Weaving the Threads Together

A strong workplace culture isn’t built from one thread alone—it’s made by weaving together purpose, people, values, systems, and leadership into something durable and dynamic.

That’s why my logo looks like a weave. It’s a visual reminder that culture isn’t a slogan on the wall or a one-time initiative. It’s something we build—deliberately, strand by strand.

When it’s strong, it holds through pressure. When it’s intentional, it doesn’t fray with change.

Leaders have a framework to guide decisions. People feel grounded, connected, and able to grow.

That’s what I aim to help organizations do:  design and sustain a strong workplace culture—weaving it intentionally so it holds up under pressure and lets you thrive.
