When trying to improve communication, small improvements in listening skills can make a substantial difference in the way we work together.

Listen to understand, not to respond

How often do you find yourself thinking of a similar situation, question, or even idea that you think is relevant when someone is telling a story?

We often stop listening because we are formulating our response in our minds.

Let’s STOP doing that!

It’s important to really listen—not just enough to begin thinking about our next response. Truly listen to all that the other person is saying.

Watch their body language. Listen for their feelings about their story.

Next time you talk to someone, make it a point to really listen and let them know you heard them.

It’s amazing how the simple act of listening well and building our active listening skills can impact a relationship.
